Backpacks For Hunters

Backpacks make it easy for the hunter to carry all his/her gear and are an essential piece of hunting equipment

TIP 1.

I'd never venture bush hunting without my trusty backpack. They are an essential piece of hunting equipment. Just what should you store in your backpack for a full day hunting the great outdoors?

Here is what I take:

  • GPS (Global Positioning System - handheld unit, plus spare batteries)
  • Waterproof matches
  • Electrical tape
  • 2 metres of rope
  • One spare folding knife
  • Water Hydration Bladder - like CamelBak (70oz or 2 litres capacity), fits inside backpack
  • Knife sharpener
  • Camera, plus small 5 inch tripod that can be attached to tree limbs, fence posts, etc
  • Otis Rifle cleaning kit (very compact)
  • Gore-tex Windproof/waterproof coat
  • Petzl XP Headlamp (LED flashlight)
  • 20 rounds spare ammo
  • Basic first aid kit
  • High energy food such as peanuts, walnuts, cashews
  • Skinning knife
  • Compass
  • Space blanket

I only take items that are frequently used or that are required in case of emergency. Traveling as light as possible is most preferable. This should be your aim when deciding what to put in your hunting backpack.

TIP 2.

What type of hunting backpack should you use? There is no simple answer to this question. It depends on the hunting environment and personal preference.

I have used many different types of backpacks/daypacks and prefer the silent suede, waterproof types sold by Cabelas that mould to your back (extremely comfortable), make no noise while walking through the woods and hold your hunting jacket when the weather warms up.

Its important that you choose a backpack that suits your needs because it will be your companion on a long day hunting.
