Best Shooting positions, accuracy check and the one gun shooter!Shooting/Hunting tips of the monthApril 2004 TIP 1.Whenever possible, try to find some sort of rest or support when taking shots at game with a rifle. The best shooting position is prone, but usually the terrain won't allow you to take advantage of it. And a tree, stump or rock often fails to show itself when you need it most. That leaves us with the sitting position. To make the sitting position even better, consider using crossed sticks, like the Stoney Point bipod or Steady Stix II from cabelas.com. They're lightweight, portable and rugged and allow you to take accurate shots anywhere in the field. More about shooting positions...
TIP 2.To check the accuracy of your gun and different ammo, we must start with a solid benchrest. On this you will need a front rest or leather sand bag to hold the front of the gun, or forearm. And a rear rest with rabbit ears to hold the buttstock firmly in place. Setup the bench, bags and gun so that the bench and bags do all the work - in other words to hold the rifle perfectly still, on target. TIP 3.Beware the one gun shooter! We have heard this time and time again. Total familiarity with shooting one gun and in-depth knowledge of how the chosen load performs in that gun is the most important elements of successful shooting - period. Use a rifle and calibre you feel 100% comfortable using and learn to
hit a 10 inch vital zone at 100, 200, 300 yards in a variety of
shooting positions.
