Recoil reducer, proof test your rifle scope and shooting chronographsShooting/Hunting tips of the monthAUGUST 2003 TIP 1.Has recoil got the better of you? Have you considered using a recoil reducer so you start enjoying shooting your .300 Winchester Magnum or similar big gun? I know of many owners of such large calibres who couldn't even hit a tin can at 50 yards while benchresting! The problem is that most owners are scared of the recoil and excessive muzzle blast using such big calibres develop and develop a nasty flinch. The solution? Practice, practice, practice...and more practice! Use light loads and practice often. Or consider using a recoil reducer or some other type of recoil reduction system available (see link below): More info on recoil reducers...
TIP 2.If you are planning a trip to a distant country where the temperature can drop to minus 35 degrees Celsius, consider proof testing your rifle scope. How is this done? It is a simple process of putting your rifle scope into the deep freezer for a few hours. When you take it out of the freezer, wipe the lens with a lint free cloth and look through the rifle scope. If there is any internal fogging, take the rifle scope back to where you purchased it. Without testing your rifle scope this way, you could waste thousands of dollars on a hunting trip into some exotic location just because your rifle scope failed to withstand the cold climate. It may seem like harsh treatment, but you'll be glad to know your rifle scope works under adverse conditions. Rifle scope terminology, tips and tricks...
TIP 3.Have you ever used a chronograph? Shooting chronographs such as the Chrony and Pact give you useful information like the actual velocity of your favourite loads, and you can also check whether velocities are uniform. Such information is desirable from the viewpoint of obtaining good and consistent accuracy. You can also discover which powder will give you the highest velocity in a specific cartridge, while staying within the pressure limits. More info on shooting chronographs...
