Ideal hunting rifle weight, Cartridge loading blocks and Bullet pullers

Shooting/Hunting tips of the month

January 2005

TIP 1.

What rifle weight is considered ideal for hunting? Opinions on this matter vary. Here's something to consider.

Firstly, a hunting rifle must be heavy enough to absorb some recoil, especially hard recoiling magnum calibers. Too much weight helps reduce felt recoil, but becomes a burden on your shoulders while hunting, slowing down your mobility. A 6.5-7 pound rifle is considered lightweight. That's about as light as you'd want to go with calibers above .270 Winchester.

Secondly, a hunting rifle should be heavy enough to hold steady in the wind and resist the bounce of your pulse. Too less weight and it becomes much harder to hold steady.

Also, shortening the barrel by a few inches to reduce weight will rob you, on average, around 80fps. Accuracy may suffer as a result.

As you can see there is a lot more to choosing a hunting rifle than just the caliber.

TIP 2.

Cartridge loading blocks which hold on average 60 cases prevent cases from being tipped over and spilling powder. If we stand our cases up on the bench it's a sure bet they'll get knocked over and roll onto the floor. If you reload, you know how handy this reloading accessory can be!

TIP 3.

Occasionally, you'll load a batch of ammo too hot and want to pull the bullets in order to reduce the powder charge. Or, you may want to pull the bullets from cheaply obtained military surplus ammo and replace it with hunting bullets. To do this you'll need an inertia-type puller such as Quinetics Kinetic Magnum bullet puller or RCBS Inertia bullet puller.
