Check Wind direction, custom triggers and trimming cases

Shooting/Hunting Tips of the Month

JULY 2003

TIP 1.

Before you head off for a hunt, it is vital you check wind direction. I always carry a small plastic bottle (similar to the ones that hold gun oil) filled with fine dust that fits in my shirt pocket.

To check the wind direction, just squeeze the bottle a few times and note the direction the dust is carried. You could just as easily grab some dirt from the ground and let it run through your fingers as you break it up. Either method works just fine, but I like to carry such a bottle just in case.

Remember, an animals sense of smell is about 300 times better than ours, so it only makes sense to check the wind direction before you head off hunting - otherwise be prepared to walk hours without seeing a thing!

TIP 2.

Standard factory triggers seem to be fine for most shooters and hunters. But if you want to go one step further then consider installing a timney trigger.

My Winchester model 70 featherweight in .22/250Rem is fitted with a timney trigger. I like the light, clean and crisp feel with every shot. You must have confidence in the rifle you shoot to be consistently accurate and if this means replacing the trigger mechanism, then the better shooter you'll be as a result.

See Timney Triggers website for more info...

TIP 3.

If you are a handloader, you know how tedious and time consuming the 'trimming' stage is. I know first hand the hours spent carefully trimming 100 .22/250 Remington cases. It is a frustrating but necessary extra step in reloading. That was until the new, revolutionary RCBS X-Die. The X-Die from RCBS is a full-length case sizing die used in place of the standard sizer die.

With the X-Die, cases can be fired and sized many times without their lengths exceeding industry maximums. Through a patented design, the X-Die is able to limit growth at the mouth of the case. A great time saver!
