Hunting skills, how different cartridges are named and proper scope mountingShooting/Hunting tips of the monthOctober 2003 TIP 1.We humans are always looking for a better, easy way to do things. Sadly, the same applies to todays' hunter. Why sad? Well, the trend in hunting today is to buy just about every shooting/hunting gadget there is (eg. precision made 500 yard hunting rifle, laser rangefinders, etc) believing it will make us better. However, you cannot buy skill - you earn it! You earn it by practice, practice, and more practice. When did you last practice shooting at a dinner sized paper plate at 100-200 yards, with no benchrest, in the wind, and hit it every time? When was the last time you used a compass and map to navigate new hunting areas, rather than a GPS? Forget about all the fancy new gadgets and focus on developing solid skills in: marksmanship, understanding/getting close to your quarry (great hunters are usually great naturalists). Do not try to buy skill. Instead, absorb, learn and practice! Hunting skills, camping skills...
TIP 2.Here is something to think about... If the 45-70 is a .45 calibre, what does the 70 stand for? In the old black powder days, the second number (70) refers to the powder charge. So 70 grains of black powder. Some of this carried over to modern loads. For example, the 30-30 Win and 30-30 Krag used the second number to designate a charge of smokeless powder. The 30-06 was originally calibre .30 Model 1906 and was shortened for ease of use. The .22/250 is a 250 Savage necked down to .22 calibre - the second number describes the original case. TIP 3.The biggest problem when mounting a scope is aligning the crosshairs with the gun. The vertical crosshair should point down through the center of the bore. If the scope is tilted, the gun will actually be shooting from one side to the other. Now scope mounting is made easy with the 'Reticle Leveler' from Segway Industries. Held in place with a thin rubber band, it sits on the scope base, below the scope, and instantly allows exact crosshair alignment. A simple tool that works. Reticle Leveler, correct mounting of scope...
