Reloading tip, stuck cases and what hunting is all aboutShooting/Hunting tips of the monthOctober 2004 TIP 1.Most handloaders prefer to use a powder thrower and weigh every 10th charge or so to check for consistency. Ball and flake powders measure quite easily and are normally very consistent. Kernel (tubular - slow burning) powders are much harder to cycle through a powder measure. This results in non-uniform powder charges with every lift of the handle. The solution? Drop 2 or 3 grains from the desired amount and make up the full amount by using a powder trickler onto the scale dish to get it exact every time.
TIP 2.Novice reloaders are often puzzled when fired cases take much effort to full length resize or even neck size. The complaint often goes like this: "I've applied some lube to the case, but it is still hard to resize the case". One thing they forgot to do: brush the inside of the case neck. Yes, it really is this simple. Simply brush the inside of every case before sizing a few times to remove burnt powder residue and other foreign material. It makes one hell of a difference! TIP 3.The accuracy and ballistics of todays firearms means it is generally no longer essential for the hunter to get near his quarry. However, closing in for the kill is what hunting is all about, the excitement and joy of getting close to your prey. Stalking in closer increases your chances of a clean kill. All shooters perform best when relaxed. Most of us feel confident of hitting a paper target at close range when sighting in a rifle. But the further the bullseye is moved away, the more tense one becomes. The same applies in the field. So, get as close as possible and place your shot well and know
that you've outwitted an animal with senses far superior to ours.
