Primer seating depth, powder charge accuracy and taming rifle recoilShooting/Hunting tips of the monthSeptember 2004 TIP 1.Exacting primer seating depth will also help accuracy. But I'm sure the question you are asking right now is what reloading tool can do this? Its called a "ram prime" die. This die looks like any other reloading die, except that you fit
a shellholder at the top of the die, insert a live primer, and use
the full stroke of the press to seat all primers at exactly the same
depth each stroke, after adjusting die depth in the press for the
desired priming depth (just below flush).
TIP 2.Accuracy and individually weighed powder charges go hand in hand. But we all know this is a tedious job, especially when charging 50-100 cases at a time. What to do? Setup your powder thrower to throw a charge about 0.5 to 1 grain less than the desired amount. This charge goes directly into a scale pan, which is then placed on the scale, and bring the scale into balance using a powder trickler. Using this simple method, I can precisely charge about 50 cases in less than
14 minutes!
TIP 3.You can tame rifle recoil in several different ways. For best results, try a combination approach. If recoil really bothers you, install a heavy duty recoil pad and a muzzle
brake, then wear a shoulder pad when you shoot. If that does not work, then
its time to move to a lighter kicking cartridge. For example, a 308 produces
less recoil than the 30-06, yet both are effective rounds for deer-sized
game.
