Tips on how to use your GPS when Hunting

TIP 1.

GPS. Global Positioning System. We've all heard about how GPS can help you with your hunting. I've owned several handheld GPS units over the years and have used them quite successfully on hunting and fishing trips.

The particular model I own continuously tracks 12 GPS satellites orbiting the earth. This results in a quick position fix (around 15-20 seconds is normal). If you are in the market for a GPS, don't forget to ask if it has this 12 channel parallel receiver. Otherwise you are wasting your money on outdated technology.

TIP 2.

Here are ways in which I have used the GPS:

  • Recover trophy animals.
  • Calculate total walking distance.
  • Navigate to favourite hunting grounds with pinpoint precision.
  • Estimate time to get to favourite hunting spot.
  • Calculate extremely accurate bearings
  • Calculate distance to downed game
  • Lock in position of fresh game tracks, wallows, rub marks etc

Overall, I have found a GPS to be such a useful hunting tool and I highly recommend them.


TIP 3.

To get a lock on 3 satellites as fast as possible (3 are required to calculate your position), point the receiver of the GPS unit north, pointing up towards the sky at a 45 degree angle.

If you are in a forest or heavily timbered area, try to find a clearing if you are unable to lock into any GPS satellites.

ALWAYS remember to carry fresh alkaline batteries for your GPS unit - you'll never know when you need to replace them!
