Why use Laser Range Finders for Varmint Hunting?

Varmint hunting is about shooting at small sized targets (e.g. prairie dogs) from long to extreme distances (ie, 200 - 700 yards). Obviously, knowing the exact distance to the target is a distinct advantage when varmint shooting, because its easy to under/over-estimate the range and miss completely. Laser range finders can measure this distance with astonishing accuracy.

So how do I use a laser range finder? Simple. You use them like binoculars or any other telescopc device. Look through the eyepiece of the range finder to locate the target, press a button and the distance is measured instantly in either yards/metres.

How does it work? Your range finder works by calculating the time it takes for the laser beam to reach the target, then travel back (ie, reflect).

Which Laser Range finder is best for Varmint Hunting?

The type of laser range finder to use for varmint hunting depends on what distances you intend to shoot. Many range finders can accurately measure distances up to 1500 yards - but do you need this? Sure, if you intend to shoot up to 1500 yards away!

Most basic entry level range finders from Leupold, Bushnell, etc work brilliantly out to 400 yards and at a price every varmint hunter can afford. If your varmint shooting distance is typically less than 400 yards, such a laser range finder is all you need.

The next group of laser range finders not only extend the distance from 500-1000 yards, they can even calculate all sorts of useful ballistic info such as holdover, wind drift, etc. When shooting at those distances you need all the help you can get.
